What is your payment policy for classroom and behind the wheel training?

Payment must be received in full by the first day of class.  Full payments not being received by the first day may result in your son or daughter's enrollment being canceled.

If desiring to make payments, we do allow half payments to be made with initial enrollment and final half payments to be made by the first day of class.

Behind the Wheel

How are drive times scheduled?

Drive times occur Monday - Sunday from approximately 8 am - 9 pm anytime students are not in school or driver education class.

NOTE 1: Student's permit number and expiration date will be required to enroll for BTW drive times.

NOTE 2: Two students wanting to be driving partners will need to enroll for BTW time by signing in at the same time and choosing the same day, time, and instructor.

NOTE 3: Special Accommodations - Email info@rightwaydrivered.com if any of the following apply:

Teen wants to drive with more than one other teen (i.e. group of 3 or more)

□ After closing BTW Scheduling, that last week before the first day of class will be used to ensure company and State requirements are met regarding your son or daughter's six drive times. Any final changes needing to be made to ensure requirements will be made by Right Way and will be communicated to you within the week before class.

□ It is important you understand all six drive times are not confirmed until after we have completed the final check. At that time we will email a final enrollment of drive times and any last-minute reminders regarding classroom time. Please be prepared to be cooperative regarding any drives needing to be changed due to our final check of company and State requirements.

If at any time there is anything we can do to meet a need and help your son or daughter have a successful and fun driver education experience, please let us know. By the way, don't forget, this is to be a blessing to parents, friends, and guardians, not an added burden. We're here to help!

How many drive hours with a certified instructor must a student complete?

All students must complete six driving hours with a certified instructor.

My teen is busy after school. Do you have morning drives available?

Yes, we have early morning drive times from 6:00 - 8:00 am, but these are set up on an as-needed basis.  These drive times may also be altered to adjust for the student's need to arrive earlier to school than 8 am.

These drives are picked up at the classroom sessions location and the student is then dropped off at their school.

If school is canceled, will my driving time be canceled, too?

Please first note that we do not follow school cancelations. Oftentimes parents are more than welcoming of their son or daughter driving in the snow because many have signed them up specifically for winter driving. Oftentimes if the interstates are hazardous, the residential areas are not; vice versa. Thus, we make the most of the opportunities given to us during the winter months.

With that said, when making the decision to drive or to cancel, we collectively,
(instructors, parents, and students) make a decision based on common sense and
good judgment. Students living in rural areas many times cannot even venture out while students living in the city may not have any delays or difficulties. If we have roadways available to us that are safe to drive, we will drive.  If we do not, we won't.

If you at any time do not feel comfortable with your son or daughter driving or
cannot even venture out to make the drive, we completely understand and will
accommodate in scheduling a replacement drive. Please contact me as soon as
possible if needing cancel a drive time.

Finally, if you do not receive a call from either me or the instructor, plan to drive. If we cancel, we will send a text to all cell phone numbers listed and will send an email.   If canceling class, we will try to make contact at least one hour before class begins.

If I need to miss a class, how do I make up this time?

Classroom time is made up by: attending a class in the session BEFORE  your enrolled session, by attending a class AFTER your enrolled session, or by attending a class during the same weeks of your enrolled class IF you are not already scheduled to be in driver education that same day.

Please email us requesting a make-up class date for the missed classroom time.

NOTE:  State requires student to only attend three hours of classroom time in one day.

What are the required number of classroom hours?

The state of Iowa requires 30 hours of classroom time.

.

Is an entire classroom session ever canceled?

On rare occasions a classroom session may be canceled due to low enrollment and usually only occurs in the first winter months of the new year.

A minimum of 15 students is required to hold a classroom session.  If a class is canceled, you will be notified through email.  Your enrollment can either be rolled into a different class or refunded.

Again, this rarely happens.

Instruction Permit

Do I have to wait six months after getting my permit to sign up for driver ed?

No.  The six-month wait applies to teens getting their school permit. In order for teens to get a school permit, they must hold their permit for six months, accident free.  To understand more about school permits, click the following link:  http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/ods/under18.html

For further clarification and as of January 1, 2014, teens now must hold their permit for one year, accident free before getting their license.  To understand more about transitioning from permit to license, click here http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/ods/under18.html

When can my teen get the Instruction Permit?

Students must be 14 years of age. For detailed information, please click on the DOT website link below:

http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/ods/dlsites/cedarrapids.htm

Certificate

What if we have lost our driver ed certificate?

We will need to reissue a new driver ed certificate to you and cancel the original one. Under Resources click Duplicate Certificate Request under Driver Ed Certificates.  Fill out the information and submit with the reissuing fee of $25. The certificate will be mailed out within 48 hours of receipt of request.

Duplicate certificates cannot be faxed or scanned because as State law requires it to typewritten and with one original signature.

Adult Instruction

What is the maximum number of Adult Driving Lessons I can take?

There is no minimum or maximum number of driving lessons for an adult.  However, an estimation of how many drives might be needed will be determined after the first drive lesson.

Typically, if an adult has driving experience, it may take between 1 - 3 driving lessons.  If an adult does not have driving experience, it may take between 6 - 12 driving lessons.

Time frames are based on the individual's grasp of the behind-the-wheel concepts and fundamentals.  We suggest at least six driving hours, those being the same required amount of hours of teenagers moving from permit to license, for adults with no or limited driving experience.

When may I schedule and pay for an Adult Driving Lesson?

We have drivers available for anytime during the day or evening, and the following questions would need to be answered in order to get started:

1.  Do you have an Iowa permit? You must have this to begin driving with us.
2.  Have you had any driving experience? If so, what type and how much?
3.  Will you need to be picked up and dropped off for the driving lesson?
4.  Will you be sending a check or paying in cash?
5.  What is your availability both day and time, including weekends?
6.  Anything special that our driver needs to be aware of regarding your driving?

Payment of $50 an hour is due at the start of your drive time.  To request a drive time for an adult, under Resources please click Adult Driving Lesson Request.

Upon our receipt of your request, we will contact you with the days available, the instructor's contact information, and any final details regarding the drive time.

Can I rent one of the Right Way vehicles for my road test

Unfortunately we do not allow the use of a Right Way car for DOT drives. We cannot for two reasons:

1. During the summertime especially, we usually do not have time available, and 2. If the car would be damaged and need repair, the cost and time lost in drives already scheduled to be rescheduled is too risky for the fee to rent the Right Way car.

Individuals needing to take the DOT drive test usually ask family or a friend to use their car for the drive test.
